FanficRecs Not Really Worthy Of A Place Here
I am unimpressed by My Nephew Harry. Yes, the idea at the core is good, and the author does manage to make Marge's change of heart/opinion plausible. But that really can't rescue this story from a decided lack of skill in execution. The author desperately needs to take a course in creative writing and learn how to build a story. Just as a sampling of its lacks: it has almost no dialogue (even in scenes where people are talking extensively!); its time sense is confused (and/or is subject to poorly-implemented in media res on almost a per-chapter basis); there are sudden and unexplained POV shifts, sometimes in the middle of a paragraph; and almost everything that happens is told to the reader rather than shown. Given its technical faults I suppose it's a blessing in disguise that the author is subject to underwriting — nearly every installment of this story is less than 15 or 20 paragraphs in length, and some are less than 10. (And considering how short the chapters are, how it has taken the author over two years to write the 13 installments it possesses at the time I write this is beyond me.) In short, this is an obvious beginner's work. If the author gets some real training in the craft of writing, though, she has a chance to be very good indeed.
FanficRecs Kinda Refreshing
Some spoilers ahead:
I'm not gonna say that the story is greatly written and especially not that it is a masterpiece, but I really enjoyed this. Its short, that sometimes that just means you can get through it quickly and move on to do something else. The one thing about this fic that separates it from much others is that it does a good job of not bashing (almost) anyone while at the same time not giving (almost) anyone a leather pants treatment. Marge, Vernon and Petunia are bad people in the books but are somehow made even worst in fanfics and soon become complete monsters. This gives good reasons for all of their behavior and leaves you wanting to actually support them. Marge was told that everything Dudley did was Harry's fault. Vernon is suffering from the fact that wizards could come to his home and kill him and that not ONLY would there be nothing he could do about it, but he can't warn ANYBODY. And the whole fic at first makes it believe that its entire Petunia's fault and than you see her point of view and shes just as human as anyone else. Allowing for a rare case where the story's POV on a character and the characters in the story's PO Vs are kept separate. It comes together well. If you want to read a story about mindless bashing than read something from the 'Ron the death eater; Harry Potter page, for every other Harry Potter fan I would recommend this story.
